In a Hurry

even jesus can't console me tonight
no north star is guiding my way home
it's just me
this green jeep
and five over the speed limit
as the cycle of
come and go
goes
separate
and
reunite
back again to separate
feet falling on the back sidewalk
my hands in my hair
wiping tears with the back of my hand
just wanting the safety of the car
inside I lock the doors
lean into the steering wheel
sob and gag on self-pity
I catch fresh tears on this white t-shirt
contemplate this slip of paper as kleenex
in a hurry to fill the tank
in a hurry out of this town
my promise caps my speed
here I am in a hurry
with a tether
