Springing
crisscrossing tree branches
dividing a blue sunday afternoon sky
spring springing
sun and a cool breeze her first offerings
bodies stretching and eyes blinking away the frost
ignoring goosebumps in favor of a bright day
sidewalks caked in the soot of melted snow
swept away down the street drain
concrete gutters cluttered with dead leaves and bottlecaps
which the spring rains will wash away
hidden in the sewage system
to come out promisingly cleansed from the tap
clinking in highballs across the country
this place being one of the last states to drink the summer sun
golden-throated and singing the praises of the sun goddess
the promise of change
all from crisscrossing tree branches
