To Want More
they bring their own coffee cups
sit together under a table lamp
he's reading free weekly’s
she's writing
both wear glasses
she leans back to drink her coffee
throws her head back in a giggle
they are in a fifty year conversation
with each other
they do this every saturday morning
share sweet bread
and time
time alone while together
an occasional thought thrown across the table
her head is resting in her hand
she's playing with her blonde graying curls
she swirls the remnants of her coffee
he adjusts his glasses
and reads with a curious forehead crease
his thumb plays with his mouth
behaviors they've memorized
and trust in one another
he finishes the last bites of their shared snack
as she unfolds a map
eyes searching searching searching
she holds it up
the lamp highlighting lines and the blue of water
he's more on the edge of his seat now
interested
she removes her glasses for a closer look
he's fidgeting with his coffee lid
she's talking
he looks over the table at the map
they are planning a trip
time alone while together
he's cleaning all the crumbs off the table
taking the plate back
she is hunched over the table
excited to read more about their trip
she's reading to him now
he leans forward
listens
velcroed shoes on tiptoes
eager
he doesn't talk much
but hears every word she says
isn't bothered by her humming excitement
nods at all the right places
she is so excited
despite her age
maybe she realizes
they haven't done it all
seen it all
heard it all
she's leading their drive for more
they want more
and they want it together
