Two Women Writers Living Together
tampons on the dining room table
that is now an in-house cafe that we "write" at
headphones and mp3 players needing to be recharged
a dog sighing the most dramatic whine she's capable of
and a cat queen prowling his territory on soft paws with an aire of criticism
and arrogance
the washer has decided not to drain tonight
but the dishes have finally been cleaned and put away
dog toys litter the original hardwood floors
photos and homemade greeting cards litter the refrigerator door
the recycling stands reeking of privilege and excess next to the front door
we have red ikea rugs that match our red ikea table and our red ikea lamp
bookshelves, one for each woman, are lined with colorful paperback spines
screaming words like, "CUNT" and "LESBIAN" and "FUCK."
half-burned candles with wax frozen in drips dot the living room
an ashtray and various ani difranco cd's scatter across the coffee-table
netflix DVD's stacked on top of the dvd player
connected to a tv that isn't skinny and isn't expensive
the litter box is tucked in the corner by the backdoor
and we keep board games and DVD's in an antique dresser
the basement is an in-progress, soon-to-be craft room turn storage closet
stacked with boxes of class notes and textbooks from undergrad
plastic bins of yarn and a treasure chest of fabric waiting to be repurposed
an incense stick burns somewhere near the humble cd player clock radio
on the round rug beneath the round coffee table lies three pairs of shoes
cable modem and wireless router tucked behind framed family photos
the bathroom is stocked with tampons, toilet paper and reading material
q-tips, homemade patchouli soap, and a cup of disposable razor heads in the
shower
less hair products than you'd imagine
and more cold medicine and herbal remedies than you'd expect
our sheets are worn and faded, towels stained and spotted
six different kinds of glue and three years worth of saved magazine clippings
pieces of cardboard waiting to be victims of our "art"
periodicals from a trip to san francisco taken seven years ago
love notes and cheap stuffed animals from every previous relationship
and coffee at two hours till midnight
